Heavy rains cause flood all over Metro Manila

Allow me to share some heart-breaking incidents that happened in Metro Manila, Philippines because of the heavy downpour caused by southwest monsoon.

Aug. 7, 2012 - 9am: The weather bureau has issued a red warning signal over Metro Manila saying that heavy to intense (15-30mm/hr) rainfall may be expected within the next two hours with occasional torrential (over 30mm/hour) downpour.

Philippine Astronomical Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that there is no tropical cyclone existing within the Philippine Area of Responsibility. The heavy downpour is due to the southwest monsoon.

Aug. 7, 2012 - 10am: According to PAGASA, the following dams have released water:
  • Ipo dam, two gates at .275 meters each
  • Ambuklao dam, two gates at 1.5 meters each
  • Binga dam, three gates at 2.5 meters each
  • and San Roque dam, two gates at 2 meters each.

Hope that the heavy rains will eventually stop to prevent further damage to lives and properties and that the waters from the dams would not create more chaos in the metropolis. Let us all join our hands in prayers to those who were affected.

  1. (UPDATE) The weather bureau has raised public storm warning signals over several provinces in Northern Luzon as tropical storm Helen (international name Kai-tak) is expected to bring heavy to torrential rains and strong winds over the area.

As of 1 P.M. Monday (August 13), the center of tropical storm Helen is located at 510 kilometers east, northeast of Casiguran, Aurora.

"Helen has intensified into a tropical storm and is now threatening Northern Luzon," the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its 11 a.m. update.
